John H. Hughes

John H. Hughes passed away on September 23, 2023 at Laurelbrooke Personal Care Harmony Circle in Brookville, PA.

He was born November 11, 1933 to J. Hordley Hughes and Lena Shaffer in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

John was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Punxsutawney and was a long-time participant in the Tuesdays Bible Study. He retired after 37 years of teaching, but frequently said “I didn’t retire, I had a career change.” His “career change” found him rehabilitating several buildings on Greenwood Avenue.  He enjoyed gardening, woodworking, photography, videography, making and sending greeting cards, and hunting.

He is survived by three sons: Keith and Jean of Punxsutawney, Kirk of Versailles, KY, and Kevin and Valerie of Punxsutawney; ten grandchildren: Marcella and Matt McGaughey of Hingham, MA, Andrew and Leslie Hughes of Lake Arrowhead, CA, Merritt Hughes of Versailles, KY, Kathryn and Jesse Mason of Houston, TX, Allyson and Christopher Sabart of Houston, TX, Shannon and Kevin Visbal of Georgetown, KY, Kelly and Cameron Henderson of Winchester, KY, Marisa Hughes of Ridgewood, NY, Jocelyn and Seth Gray of Indiana, PA, and Kevin and Sierra Hughes of Indiana, PA and eighteen great-grandchildren and one on the way.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by Joyce Smith, his wife of nearly 60 years in 2013, a

daughter Karen in 1974, his first grandson, Ryan Hughes in 2021, and a sister Jane Flanagan in 2022.

Friends will be received at 10 am Saturday, October 7, 2023 at the Presbyterian Church,106 E. Union Street, Punxsutawney, PA.  A service will follow at 11am with Rev. Erin Kobs officiating.
