Robert L. “Pickles” Deahl, 81, of Rossiter, died October 12th, 2022, at Ridgeview Healthcare and Rehab in Curwensville, PA.
He was born on January 4, 1941, to the late Jonas and Helen (Timblin) Deahl in Rossiter. He was a 1959 graduate of Punxsutawney Area High School and joined the United States Army in 1961. During his two years in the Army, he served tours in France and Germany performing duties as a Communications Specialist and as a Military Policeman.
After completing his military service, he worked in the coal mines at Greenwich Collieries for 16 years. He was also a self-employed subcontractor laying flooring and carpet for over 40 years.
Robert was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing a few rounds of golf with his closest friends after his retirement. He would jokingly say “Old golfers never die they just lose their balls” When he wasn’t on the golf course, he could be found shooting pool as a pool shark who loved a good match. He played on the pool league for the Punxsutawney Eagles. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, spending time with his pets, and grabbing a cup of coffee or a cold beer or two with the guys. He always made sure to make his rounds to sign his name up for the nightly drawings at the various clubs around town. He was a big sports fan and enjoyed watching all types of sports on tv, but his favorites were the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pittsburgh Pirates. He was a member of the Rossiter and Punxsutawney American Legions, Walston Club, Punxsutawney Eagles, Elks, and Moose.
He spent 44 years with JoAnn (Henry) and they later married on March 18, 2003. Robert and JoAnn loved their traditional Thursday night date night at the Eagles Club.
Robert is survived by his children Mark Deahl and wife Erin, Punxsutawney, Bobbie Jo Deahl, Punxsutawney, Chris Smisek and wife Moscha, Apollo Beach, Florida, and Brandy Gahres and husband Ryan, Richland. He is also survived by his 5 grandchildren, Lexi Ann Dunlap, Payton Marie Deahl, Chase Axel Wildeson, Christopher Reed Smisek, and Liam Robert Gahres. His brothers, William Deahl and wife Carol, St. Marys, Gary Deahl and wife Joyce, Rossiter, and sister Diane Cauvel and husband Mike, Sigel, and several nieces and nephews
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Joan Myers and two nephews, Richard Deahl and Dale Myers.
Friends will be received at McCabe Funeral Home, Inc. in Punxsutawney on Saturday, October 29 from 11am until the time of service at 1pm. Interment will follow at Union Cemetery in Rossiter, PA.
