Nina E. Smathers, 91, of DuBois, formerly of Mahaffey, peacefully passed away on Friday, January 2, 2026 at Penn Highlands DuBois Hospital.
She was born April 30, 1934 to Ellwood and Grace (Geist) Yount in Mayport, Jefferson County.
Nina was a member of Mount Carmel Church, Mahaffey. She loved taking care of her vegetable and flower gardens with her beautiful peonies, gladiolas and rhododendron. One of her favorite pastimes was watching the birds enjoy one of her many feeders outside her windows. She loved to cook for her family and worked tirelessly to keep everyone happy and fed every day. She was a very kind, compassionate woman who listened patiently to everyone but never wanted the spotlight herself.
Nina is survived by two daughters and a son; Beverly A. Hook and husband Bill, Pittsburgh, Joseph L. Smathers and wife Suzanne, Mahaffey and Patricia D. Conrad and husband Keith, Pittsburgh, six grandchildren; Stephanie D. Hook and husband Jim Yauger, Steven W. Hook and wife Stephanie E., Jacob D. Smathers and wife Teia, Melissa J. Wical and husband Justin, Jocelyn G. Russo and husband Vincent, and Joel A. Conrad and wife Ashley, eight great-grandchildren, a brother, William Yount and wife Ruby, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Roscoe C. (Jake) Smathers in 2022, her siblings including infants Harry and Annabelle, Bertha Dinger, Norma Burns, Louise Vasbinder, Darl Yount, Harold Yount, Glenn Yount and Clair Yount.
Friends will be received on Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the Waldron Funeral Home, 831 Market St. Mahaffey, PA 15757 and on Thursday from 1:00 PM until the time of service at 2:00 PM at Mt. Carmel Church, 3023 Clover Run Road, Mahaffey, PA 15757 with Pastor Brian Barrett officiating.
Interment will take place at Mt. Carmel Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to Mt. Carmel Church.
