Jean Beatrice Tangren

September 6, 1919 — June 29, 2017

Mary Jean Beatrice Droney Tangren (Jean) died on Thursday evening, June 29, 2017. Her actual date of birth was often questioned. Family insisted as she was born in the early morning of September 7, 1919. However, the doctor listed Jean’s birthdate as September 6, 1919, as he arrived at the family home earlier that evening. Jean was the sixth of the seven children of William Earl Droney and Dorothy Theresa Brissee in DuBois, PA. In 1942, she married Harry Raymond Tangren (Ray) of Punxsutawney, PA. During their courtship, the two would steal time together at Punxsutawney High School football games. Jean did not like sports and although she hated drinking milk, Jean routinely ordered milkshakes at a nut shop where Ray worked as a soda jerk. Ray preceded her in death in 2004. Jean was a life-long member of St. Cosmos & Damien Catholic Church in Punxsutawney, PA. For many years she taught Catechism in Aultman, PA, and later at St Cosmos & Damien. She was well-known for her baking, more specifically her pie-making skills. One daughter, Diane Marie Tangren, died in 2014. Jean is survived by her six remaining children: David & Kathy Tangren of Lakewood Ranch, FL; Dorothy Jean Reyna of Brookville, PA; Donald & Carol Tangren of Antioch, TN; Paul & Deborah Tangren of Woodstock, VA; William & Sara Tangren of Takoma Park, MD; and Mary Tote of Brookville, PA. Her grandchildren include: David & Edivia Tangren of Chamblee, GA; Christopher & Jessica Tangren of Cambridge, MA; Michelle Tatgenhorst of Valparasio, IN; Paul & Diana Reyna of Pembroke, MA; Donald Tangren of Nashville, TN; Douglas & Jinah Tangren of New York, NY; Denver Tangren of Antioch, TN; Bryan & Carmen Tangren of Reston, VA; Amanda & Tom Nexus of Reston, VA; Nathan & Amanda Knowles Tote of Philipsburg, PA; and Jessica Tote of Hughesville, PA. She is also survived by seven great-grandchildren: Claire Straitiff, Isaac Straitiff, Aaron Straitiff, Arthur Tangren, Jacqueline Tangren, Eleanor Reyna, and Clara Reyna. An eighth great-grandchild is expected in October of this year. Viewings will be held on Sunday, July 2, 2017 from 2pm-4pm and from 6pm-8pm at McCabe Funeral Home, 114 Maple Avenue, Punxsutawney, PA. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11am on Monday, July 3, 2017 at St. Cosmos & Damien Catholic Church, 616 West Mahoning Street, Punxsutawney, PA. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, 444 South Main Street, Punxsutawney, PA. Online condolences may be made at mccabefuneralhomespa.com
