Elin Steffey, 87, of Punxsutawney, PA, passed on to eternal life with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, at her home, surrounded by family on Monday, July 6, 2026.
She was born July 13, 1938 in Barnesboro, PA, daughter of the late Charles Leonard Butterworth and Edith (Hammarstrom) Bertamini. She was born in the home of her grandparents, Andrew and Mary Hammarstrom. Elin was raised in a loving home with her mom, brother Ben and grandparents. Elin graduated from Northern Cambria High School in 1956. After graduation, she moved to Pittsburgh, PA to work with the Aetna Life Ins. Co. Elin married the love of her life, Murray Steffey, at St. John Methodist Church in Barnesboro, PA, on February 26, 1960. As newlyweds, they lived in Indiana, PA for a short time. They then moved to Punxsutawney, PA. In 1967, Murray and Elin opened Steffey’s Meat Market. After a fire in 1987, the store was remodeled and reopened as Steffey’s Deli.
Murray and Elin retired in 1999 to enjoy more time with their children and grandchildren. Her love for Jesus was felt throughout the community. Murray and Elin hosted a Monday night Bible study for many years. Dr. James Fugate and his wife Mary led the Bible study. Many lives were transformed during those years. Elin was an active member of the First United Methodist Church. She served on the Evangelism Committee, participated in prayer meetings and Sunday School, and helped with Good News Clubs for many years.
God blessed Elin with three sons, Thomas M. Steffey and wife Martha of Punxsutawney, PA, Timothy K. Steffey of Punxsutawney, PA, and Mark A. Steffey of Berwick, PA. In addition to her sons, Elin is survived by her grandchildren, Joshua (Reney) Steffey, Kyle (Abigail) Steffey, Nathan Steffey, and Zachary Steffey. Other surviving relatives include her half-sister-in-law Malerie Butterworth, and nieces Janet (Dwight) Little, Ellen Camin, Jennifer Bullock, Ruth (Jeff) Watson, and Kristin Butterworth.
In addition to her husband, Murray, Elin was preceded in death by a son, Timothy Steffey; a brother, Ben Butterworth; a half-brother, Charlie Butterworth; and a great-grandson, Kenyon Steffey.
Friends will be received at the McCabe Funeral Home, Inc., 114 Maple Ave., Punxsutawney, PA on Tuesday, July 14th from 1:00-7:00 PM. Friends will also be received on Wednesday July 15, 2026 from 10:00 AM until the time of service at 11:00 AM at the First Church of God, 23 Skyview Drive, Punxsutawney. Interment is private for the family at Circle Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial donations be made to Child Evangelism Fellowship, 104 W. Mahoning St., Punxsutawney, PA 15767.
