Alfred "Al" Walter "Grump" Shaffer of Delaware City, Delaware; Born August 23,1933, died August 8,2025 at the Christiana Hospital in Newark, DE. He was 15 days away from celebrating his 92nd birthday. Born to the late Vernon and Orpha Shaffer in Covode, PA.

Al was an Army Veteran, serving in Germany after completing his training in Fort Bragg , NC. He made his career at Anchor Motor Freight as a Car hauler in Wilmington, DE. After his retirement from being a car hauler, he went on to serve as a bartender at the Delaware City Recreation Club for 22 years; when he retired in July 2025 due to illness. Al was well loved and respected by all at the club who knew him and he loved everyone there. He was an avid deer hunter his whole life and always looked forward to hunting each fall with his two sons at the family camp in Tionesta, PA as he loved to hunt. The family camp will never be the same without him. When he wasn't hunting in the fall, Al enjoyed fishing, playing Poker at the club, watching NASCAR and enjoying an ice cold beer. He was truly an animal lover as his cats would greet him at the door when he returned home from the club. Al was a Master Mason of Jackson Lodge #19 of Delaware City, DE, member of the NRA, life member of the North American Hunting Club , VFW, Sportsmen's Club of Forest County, Army and Navy Club, Fraternal Order of Eagles and Slovak Club (Punxsutawney, PA) , Albion EUB church, member of Teamsters 326 in New Castle, and a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose.

Al is survived by his 2 sons, Mark and Kevi member of Teamsters 326 in New Castle,n of Delaware City, DE, his daughter Mary Beth (Tink) Guessford (husband Chuck) of Clayton, DE , 2 grandchildren, ex-wife Judy Shaffer of Hartly, DE, sister Patricia Myers (and friend Bud) of Punxsutawney, PA, sister in law Carole McQuown of Newark, DE, dear friend of over 60 years Ron McCarty of Cresson, PA along with numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, stepfather James Becker, brother Robert, sisters Sarah, Arlene and Fonda and his brother in laws Walt Myers and Randall “Moose” McQuown.

A graveside service will take place at Lakelawn Memorial Park, Reynoldsville, PA at 1pm on Friday August 15, 2025. Military Honors will be provided by the Jefferson County Veteran's Honor Guard.

The McCabe Funeral Home of Punxsutawney have been entrusted with the arrangements.
